The North of England has played a central role in debates about the causes and consequences of the Brexit referendum, especially in the widespread perception of a divided Britain. Northern Exposure: Race, Nation and Disaffection in “Ordinary” Towns and Cities after Brexit, is a major social science project which will examine the implications of Brexit on race relations, new migrations and Northerners’ sense of place and belonging.

The Northern Exposure project is part of ESRC’s ‘Governance after Brexit’ programme, which is working closely with the UK in a Changing Europe initiative to maximise the wider impact of long term research on Brexit. See our website:

On Saturday May 7th we have a special event on campus at the University of Leeds to celebrate the completion of the project, which includes over a 150 oral history interviews with long term residents of four northern towns or cities -- Middlesbrough (above), Wakefield, Preston and Halifax, and extensive discussions with local residents, stakeholders and local authorities. We will be joined by participants, stakeholders, team members and guest academics to watch and discuss a documentary film about the project.  Please join us at this event -- RSVP to
